How is artificial intelligence transforming scientific research? What opportunities do AI tools and new workflows create, and what challenges do they bring?
These questions were at the heart of an informal exchange hosted by AI Factory Austria AI:AT on 8 July 2026, where postdoctoral researchers from the University of Vienna came together to discuss the evolving role of AI in academia.

Following the welcome and an introduction to AI:AT by COO Saša Radić, Lukas Zinner, Head of Research Services and Career Development at the University of Vienna, shared insights into current developments in the use of AI in research. The event was organised and moderated by Laura M. Pana, AI Factory Austria Liaison Officer at the University of Vienna.
Insights from Four Research Fields
The programme continued with presentations by four researchers, who shared concrete examples of how they already use AI in their scientific work. Their contributions spanned genetics and evolutionary biology, Greek papyrology, computational communication science, and political science, demonstrating the wide range of AI applications across different research disciplines.
Following the short presentations, the exchange continued at thematic discussion tables. The interactive, community-oriented format created space for in-depth conversations, the sharing of personal experiences, and a joint exploration of the opportunities, limitations, and open questions surrounding the use of AI in scientific research.
Participants had the opportunity to engage in discussions with Vice Rectors Nikolaus Hautsch and Ronald Maier, alongside Christoph Dellago, Krisztina Rozgonyi, Laura M. Pana, Michael Iro, Martin Pfister, and Riheb Hassan.

The strong interest in the event highlighted the growing demand for opportunities to exchange experiences, ideas, and practical applications of AI in research.
