Minister Hanke: “Space startup Another Earth docks with AI Factory Austria”
AI:AT enables access to European HPC systems, supporting synthetic earth observation models
AI Factory Austria AI:AT is supporting yet another innovative Austrian deep-tech start-up, Another Earth, in accessing European high-performance computing (HPC) systems. The company develops AI-based synthetic Earth observation models and is now training them on EuroHPC systems. This once again demonstrates the role of AI Factory Austria: companies can already access Europe’s most powerful computing infrastructures in a structured, efficient and supported manner.
Austria in the European data, space and AI ecosystem
AI Factory Austria AI:AT is part of the European AI Factories initiative under the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and the Horizon Europe programme. Its aim is to connect AI and HPC capacities across Europe and to build sovereign key technologies for strategic future fields – including space, Earth observation and the data economy.
“Access to European supercomputers opens up completely new potential for AI-supported space applications, earth observation and the sustainable use of resources – from climate analyses and monitoring to resilient infrastructure. The AI Factory Austria creates a clear interface for this and strengthens Austria’s competitiveness. It enables sophisticated applications and creates confidence in the technologies of tomorrow.”
Minister for Innovation and Space Peter Hanke (BMIMI)
Another Earth: AI-supported synthetic earth observation
Another Earth develops multimodal diffusion models that generate synthetic earth observation data: optical satellite images, land use data, elevation models and other geoinformation. These generated data sets can supplement existing earth observation data – for climate research, energy supply, crisis and disaster management, urban planning or precision agriculture.
The training models are based on 1.4 million image patches and require – depending on the setup – several thousand GPU hours. State-of-the-art GPU resources (A100/H100) are available for this on the EuroHPC systems.
“The goal of Another Earth is to provide access to AI and space technology for all by generating synthetic data and simulations for the entire surface of the Earth. This requires computing power. Through the AI Factory Austria, we were able to access EuroHPC infrastructure early on and run our workloads on powerful GPU hardware. This access has significantly accelerated our development process and considerably expands our innovation potential.”
Felix Geremus, CTO and co-founder of Another Earth
“Another Earth shows how our support model works in practice. As a one-stop shop, we combine consulting, technical expertise, access to computing resources and guidance on the secure use of AI. The structured process ensures that companies can experiment, develop and validate faster – right through to scalable business models.”
Karl Kugler, Co-Lead of AI Factory Austria
“What we see is that access works. Processes are established, support is effective and the infrastructure is fit for use. Another Earth is a strong example of how we bring Austrian AI innovation onto European supercomputers and enable real added value.”
Markus Stöhr, Co-Lead of AI Factory Austria and Project Manager at Advanced Computing Austria (ACA)
“Targeted support creates innovation dynamics. We are already in contact with other companies that have similar needs and are helping them to implement their projects efficiently within the AI Factory Austria and the European AI Factories network.”
Thomas Mayerhofer, Head of Innovation Center at AI Factory Austria AI:AT.
